It is the end of another year, and the Christmas break is upon us. Finally, it is the time for some well-earned rest, relaxation and time to “recharge the batteries.” Whilst everyone has their own way of relaxing, you’d be hard pressed to find somewhere better suited to unwind than amidst the scenic beauty of Obergurgl. Snow-capped mountains provide a backdrop for the clear blue skies and the fresh wind on your face as you glide down the slopes certainly sounds more appealing than cooking all day and cleaning up wrapping paper. Why not try something different this year and take the family to Obergurgl?

Obergurgl in a Nutshell

The high-altitude village of Obergurgl has been popular with British families since the 1960s. Its charm can be attributed to the incredible scenery, a long ski season that is said to be “snow-sure” and its cheerful family-friendly atmosphere with no lift lines. A gondola links Obergurgl with the even higher village of Hochgurgl.

The Stats

Altitude: 1950m

Top Lift: 3080m
Ski area: 110km of piste

Why Obergurgl is so Relaxing

In Obergurgl the atmosphere is cheerful and family-friendly and those who ski there on a regular basis like it that way. Since the ski area is a little smaller than some of the neighbouring resorts, it keeps out the adrenaline junkies and curbs the fast skiing in beginner areas. The clientele is a little older so party-seekers are better off in St Anton and we rarely see them in Obergurgl. The slopes are never over crowded, lift lines are non-existent and the piste is varied for all skill levels.

What to do in Obergurgl

Obergurgl is the perfect place to hit the slopes, regardless of your skill level. The snow sure reputation of the resort practically guarantees the piste will be forgiving to beginners. For those seeking the powder of off-piste tracks, we have plenty of those too.

For holiday makers who aren’t interested in skiing, the options for non-skiers are great. Within the resort, you can try cross-country skiing, tobogganing, snow-shoeing and skating – and there’s an indoor riding stable the Edelweiss & Gurgl hotel. If you’re not feeling active, halfway the valley at Langenfeld you’ll find the extraordinary Aqua Dome Spa Centre, complete with giant bowls of steamy thermal water. Another essential is a trip to the Top Mountain Star restaurant and bar to see the most incredible view of your life!

Christmas in Obergurgl

December is a lovely time of year to visit Obergurgl and Hochgurgl. The resort portrays the quintessential winter wonderland with its snowy setting and event calendar full of holiday activities for the whole family. Light shows, Christmas markets with typical Tirolean crafts and treats and night skiing and tobogganing and just some of the activities we recommend.
