Did you know that Obergurgl is a fantastic destination for biking/cycling? Enjoy scenic trails where you’ll see mountains, meadows and plenty of postcard-worthy views. There are varying degrees of difficulty on the routes so there is something for everyone, no matter your experience level. Here are our recommended cycling routes with all the info you need to plan your journey.
Timmelsjoch
Length (roundtrip): 2 hours
Degree of difficulty: Experienced cyclists only
Change in Altitude: 990m
Distance: 26,39km
The popular Timmelsjoch route is an exciting and challenging adventure for experienced and physically fit cyclists. This is one of the highest passes in the Alps and the highest point of the yearly Ötztaler Cycle Marathon which runs across 4 alpine passes. You’ll be faced with some challenging terrain here, including steep winding roads on an incline that will be sure to leave your muscles burning. Your journey includes access to the South Tyrolean town of Merano, a scenic (and very steep) road along the Timmelstal valley and finally a mountain inn when you reach your destination.
Festkogl
Length (roundtrip): 1 hour 45 minutes
Degree of difficulty: Experienced cyclists only
Change in Altitude: 990m
Distance: 13,64km
if you are partial to breathtaking views, this is the route for you. From Obergurgl you’ll follow the climbing route towards Lantalereckhütte; however, at 2075 above sea level you will veer off that path and take the bike trail towards Festkogl. After 60 minutes of uphill cycling you will have reached the peak…but you’re not done yet. Another 100m of climbing and the highest peak can be reached, offering bragging rights as well as an incredible panoramic view of the surrounding Alps. The downhill journey back home is equally as demanding so make sure you are in top physical form if you embark on this journey!
Gurgler Achweg
Length (roundtrip): 1 hour
Degree of difficulty: Medium
Change in Altitude: 130m
Distance: 7,65km
Here is a family-friendly route that will lead you through gorgeous alpine meadows, across a brook and the quaint Bartbücke bridge. Starting in the hamlet of Pill, you’ll follow the Gurgler Ache brook all the way to Obergurgl. Don’t forget to pack a lunch, as there are many lovely picnic spots along to stop and enjoy the moment.
