By now you have started to feel the chill in the air, the leaves on the trees are starting to turn and it won’t be long before holiday decorations start appearing in windows. These are all signs that the ski season is approaching; it won’t be long now before the snow starts falling in Obergurgl and the Chalet at 11˚ East opens for the 2015/16 season.
It isn’t too early to start preparing for your ski holiday and advance work to get the most out of your time on the slopes is highly recommended. Read on for our top tips on what to do before you take the first run of the season.
1. Get fit
The easiest and most effective way of to increase your overall strength and speed is by using interval training. This means simply doing a series of low-high intensity exercises, alternating bursts of high intensity with periods of lighter work and rest. You don’t need any special equipment and you’ll burn more calories in less time at the gym. The results on the mountain will be clear: better aerobic capacity and the ability to ski longer, harder and faster. Try doing 30 minutes just 3 times per week and you will notice the difference when you hit the slopes! You’ll also be less likely to sustain an injury.
2. Get your gear
Scrambling to buy skis, poles, gloves or any of the necessary equipment that you need for skiing is never fun when you leave it to the last minute. Do your homework and research the best equipment for your level and needs and purchase it in advance of the season. Generally, if you start looking for what you need before the season starts you will find more choices and better prices compared to after the season has started.
