October is off to a great start in Austria’s glacier ski areas! Just last week, some glaciers had 40cm of fresh snow, and as I write this blog post, it hasn’t stopped falling.
The Hintertux Glacier has seen half a meter of fresh snow since last weekend, the Pitztal Glacier (further west) has seen up to 40cm and Stubai Glacier (just south of Innsbruck) had close to 35cm. All of these glacier mountains are currently open for skiing, weather permitting.
Just around the corner from Obergurgl, you will find the Rettenbach Glacier in Solden. If you fancy some pre-season glacier skiing, the following lifts and pistes are open with reports of lovely powder snow:
- 8EUB Tiefenbach
- 6SK Seiterkar
- SL Mutkogl
- Pistes 38, 39
If this snowy October on the glaciers is any indication of how the season will begin in Obergurgl, we are pretty excited for the fun to begin when the mountain officially opens on the 17th of November.
Stay tuned for more updates on the 2016/17 ski season In Obergurgl brought to you by the Chalet at 11° East.
