If you’re thinking about a ski vacation in the Alps this winter, undoubtedly you’ll be researching which mountain resort to travel to and where you can count on the best weather. And, if you haven’t already visited the Chalet at 11˚ East you may not be aware of all the reasons to choose the wonderful Obergurgl ski resort as your ski destination this winter.
At the head of the Otztal Valley, Obergurgl is the second oldest ski resort in Austria after St. Anton (we celebrated the 100 year anniversary in 2011) and has one of the most snow sure reputations in the Alps. As one of the highest villages in the area, you’ll find many of the charms of the neighboring villages, like Solden, plus loads of fresh powder. The reasons to travel to Obergurgl don’t stop there…in no particular order, here are our top five reasons to visit Obergurgl-Hochgurgl this winter.
The Long and Snowy Season
At almost 2000 meters above sea level, Obergurgl is one of the first resorts to open for the season and one of the last to close for the summer. The snow sure reputation is indisputable with a track record that stacks up as one of the top places for snow in the Alps. The resort boasts 110 km of piste that start at 1800m above sea level, a height that for most resorts would be the top; however, in Obergurgl the top is over 3,000m in altitude which allows for unprecedented snow throughout the entire season.
The modern lift network in Obergurgl makes getting around the mountain easy and relatively crowd-free for most of the season. In addition, there is a wide variety of terrain for all levels, making it easy to ski or snowboard with a group or family with varying levels of experience. The Chalet at 11˚ East and many of the hotels in the area also offer ski-in and ski-out access.
At such a high altitude, the views are absolutely breath-taking. The incredible panorama of the Oztaler Alps stretch all the way to the Dolomites, offering views of 21 mountain peaks. To enjoy this feature fully, visit the Top Mountain Star restaurant and bar or viewing platform located at the resort summit.
The skiers and snowboarders are not the only visitors to Obergurgl in the winter, there are so many winter sporting activities you will never be bored. Enjoy Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, winter hiking, tobogganing and even indoor golf!
The après ski scene in Obergurgl is the perfect blend of tradition and fun. Several of the huts in the area offer après ski parties featuring live music, great food and drinks, and you’ll skip the crowds that you typically find at St. Anton.
We hope to see you soon at the Chalet at 11˚ East in Obergurgl!
